Mount Gang Shi Ka, elevation 5254 meters, is located in the eastern part of the Qilian Mountains, at the junction of Qinghai and Gansu Provinces. It is nestled amongst several other peaks of more than 4000 meters and the scenery of mountains, rivers, and valleys is simply breath-taking. The mountain’s glaciers begin at about 4500 meters above sea level and due to the mountain’s conditions it is an ideal place for those new to the sport of mountaineering. It is a primary staging grounds for larger peaks to come in the future.

Climbing Itinerary

D1:Arrival in Beijing, China

Check in to our hotel and get settled in. Gear check. If time permits, visit a local sight of interest. Prepare for the next day’s travel.

D2:Travel from Beijing to Xining (2275 meters)

Fly from Beijing to Xining (3 hours) and enjoy the sites and delicious foods of Northwest, China.

D3:  Xining (2275 meters)

After a hearty breakfast, we will head to the mountains near Xining where we will do an acclimatization hike to help our bodies adjust to the higher altitude.

D3:Xining to Base Camp (4360 meters)

Today we will drive from Xining about 160 km in about three hours to the town of Qingshizui where we will have lunch. From there we will drive to the Seven Colors Waterfall where we will begin about a five hour trek to Gang Shi Ka Base Camp. We will enjoy the comforts of our exceptionally beautiful log cabin which serves as our base camp.

D4:Base Camp Acclimatization/Training Day (4360 meters)

The purpose of today is to adjust to the altitude and review the necessary safety procedures and techniques necessary for climbing the mountain.

D5:Base Camp to Camp One (4900 meters)

After breakfast we will begin the climb to Camp One which will take about 5 hours. After reaching Camp One at approximately 2 PM, we will settle into our camp and get ready for the next day’s summit push. After an early dinner, we will rest to have energy for the next day’s climb.

D6:Camp One to Summit (5254 meters) to Base Camp to Xining

2861528600097_.pic_hdAccording to the weather conditions, we will set out for the summit at around 2 or 3 AM and follow the guides and mountain support to the summit. We will need to make it to the summit by about 8 AM. After reaching the summit, we will begin the descent back down to Base Camp. After resting for bit, we will hike out to Seven Color Waterfalls where we will have private transport waiting to take us to Xining.

D7:Xining to Beijing

Today we will fly 3 hours from Xining to Beijing where we can get settled into our hotel. If time permits we will visit a site of local interest. In the evening, we will enjoy our last meal together

D8:Contingency Day

In the case of inclement weather or other reasons, we will reserve one contingency day.

D9:Departure from Beijing

You are free to head back to your respective destinations at any time on this day.


Cost

The cost of a 9 day climb of Mount Gang Shi Ka is 3000 USD per person for a group of 4 or more.

The price includes:

  • a professional English speaking guide
  • an assistant guide, all necessary porters and support crew
  • all necessary group equipment (tents, radios, satellite phone, etc.)
  • all necessary permits
  • accommodation at a 4 star hotel in Beijing and Xining
  • all accommodation and transportation after arrival in Beijing
  • 3 meals per day and all necessary non-alcoholic beverages after arrival in Beijing

The price does not include:

  • China visa fees
  • transport to and from Beijing
  • food and beverages outside of the 3 meals per day
  • alcohol
  • personal climbing gear (including sleeping bag and sleeping pad ~ technical climbing gear is not necessary)
  • personal climbing insurance
